Booked: Events That Celebrate Books

by Theresa Gauthier

I’ve long been a fan of literary events. Seeing an author discuss a recently released book or participate in a panel and then signing the book is a great joy to me. Fiction, non-fiction, famous authors or new, I’ve been to a lot, planned more than a few, and I’m excited about the virtual twist these events have taken.

For obvious reasons, in recent years, authors and bookstores, and even some conventions have opted for this new twist to the standard author events. Thanks to the internet, wifi, smart phones, people everywhere are attending book events wherever they happen to be—even if the author is in another city or another country.

Hosted by Barnes & Noble and Eventbrite, these events are virtual and what I really like about this kind of event is that if you’re working and can’t possibly be at a particular physical location in time for an event, it is far easier to get to a virtual one. You don’t have to fight traffic, find a place to park, or hope you get there in time to get a good seat.

The best one I’ve been to so far was earlier this year when I got tickets to John Scalzi’s Barnes & Noble event discussing his latest book, The Kaiju Preservation Society. Scalzi is one of my all-time favorite authors, so it was a special event to me.

Barnes & Noble has some good events coming up this fall under the moniker B&N Midday Mystery Virtual Event Series. These evens begin at 3 PM.

Today, Tuesday, October 20 at 3 PM the series features author Richard Osman in conversation with Shari Lapena discussing The Bullet That Missed. The price of admission includes the cost of a signed book that ships to you after the event.

Osman’s book is the third book in hid his #1 best selling Thursday Murder Club series, this latest release, The Bullet That Missed revolves around two murders set ten years apart. Thursday Murder Club members Joyce, Ron, and Ibrahim must save Elizabeth as she’s tasked by a new enemy to kill or be killed.

The B&N Midday Mystery Virtual Event Series continues on Thursday, October 6 at 3 PM with Kimi Cunningham Grant’s These Silent Woods. An intriguing tale about a man and his daughter living in isolation in the Appalachian woods, the book is one of survival, change, and facing your past.

The following week,October 26th at 3 PM, find B&N presenting Andrew and Lee Child with their latest Jack Reacher novel, No Plan B.

November 15th brings the focus to Anthony Horowitz, in conversation with Lucy Foley about his book The Twist of A Knife.

Random House Studio Session

Random House also hosts some events this fall. On October 3 at 8 PM ET, they’ll have authors Jodi Picoult and Jennifer Finney Boylan who will speak with author Anna Quindlen about their new book Mad Honey. The book will be released on Oct. 4. They’ll discuss this latest release and their writing process. Tickets to the event include a signed copy of the book.

Happier with Boundaries, October 13th at 8 PM, is an evening of conversation between Melissa Urban and Gretchen Rubin. Discussing Urban’s new book, The Book of Boundaries and boundaries being the key to good mental health.

These are only some examples of virtual events of course, so scour the internet for something that appeals to you.
